Meeting Minutes

  • The meeting minutes for April 10, 2024 were approved after revision stating that Ted Larrison did draft letter for Beacon Health System and Community Foundation of Elkhart County on behalf of Reel Recovery. Mike Beachy submitted the request.

Fishing Reports

  • Tom Sult reported success at County Rd. 35 using a #18 Pink Midge.
  • Oliver Miller was successful on The Little Elkhart with a dry caddis.
  • The state of Indiana will be stocking over 4,000 brown trout in the Northern Indiana Streams the Week of May 13th

 Treasurer’s Report

  • The combined balances in Everwise and Interra at the end of April 2024 was  $ 21,523.53

Cobus Creek County Park

  • Mike Beachy and John Law (from the original permit/stream restoration) will survey the Creek and report with a recommendation for future work.

Middlebury Old Mill Park

  • Mike spoke with Tom Enright about doing some habitat work at the Mill Park.
  • The city has a large pile of logs ready to go.
  • This project will require a written plan and permit.

Summer Work Days for Trout Habit Restoration 

  • The Rowe Eden and Cobus Creek restorations are both on hold.
  • The first work day will be June 22nd. LECTU will cut a trail through Hoover Woods.
  • The other work days are July 13, August 3, and August 17th 
  • The worksites will be determined and announced at a later date.
  • Back Country Outfitters and SJRVFF will be contacted seeking their participation.

Annual Outing 

  • The annual outing was held Saturday May 4th  2024.
  • Overall a very good turnout, and good participation.
  • Silent Auction $ 2,400, A-A-T $ 3,780, Lunch $ 400 were the reported earnings.

Reel Recovery Update 

  • Due to a request from the Reel Recovery Executive Director there will be a Special Retreat held in Middlebury (The Essenhaus) on September 23- 25 (Monday to Wednesday).
  • The National Reel Recovery will provide the funding. LECTU will provide the needed Fishing Buddies.
  • Ted Larrison is the Facilitator and Tom Vanderputten is the Coordinator for The September Retreat.
  • There will also be Reel Recovery Retreat to held June 2025. This event will be sponsored by LECTU and LECTU will be responsible to raise the necessary funding. 

Middlebury Riverfest

  • The Riverfest is scheduled for Saturday August 24th.
  • The event this year will be in the afternoon/evening (3:00pm to 7:00pm)
  • LECTU needs to replace Keith who has been the LECTU representative on the Riverfest Committee.

Middlebury Youth Fishing Day

  • The youth fishing contest will be held on Saturday June 22nd.
  • Tom Enright has requested LECTU to provide volunteers for judges.

Fly Fishing 101

  • LECTU will conduct a Fly Fishing 101 instruction at Bonneyville County Park on June 1st at the request of The Elkhart County Parks. Keith and Tom will participate.
  • LECTU will also have a Fly Fishing 101 at The Middlebury Library on August 1st at 6:00pm. Mark Holcomb will conduct the instruction.

LECTU Outreach Program

  • Mark Holcomb and Kris Williams will work with Jamie Vaughan (Great Lakes Engagement Coordinator for TU National) regarding fly tying sessions at new venues. Potentially at Breweries etc. The purpose would be to gain exposure for LECTU.

Library Key Pickup

Wayne, Keith, and Mike have been listed by the Library being able to secure a building key for our monthly LECTU meetings. One of them will pick up the key prior to Wednesday of the meeting.

  • Middlebury Library in downtown Middlebury IN.
